Now that I've seen every Jane Austen movie...well not exactly, but almost...I thought it time to move on to something similar but different. Lucky for me, brilliant Netflix realized my very specific style and made a new suggestion genre for me appropriately called "Romantic British Dramas" or something like that. Daniel Deronda (originally a book by George Eliot) was a suggestion so I added it, watched it, and really liked it. One of the best things about this genre is that you see the same actors over and over in these period pieces... in Daniel Deronda I saw the main girl who is Emma in a BBC version, Mr. Collins from the A&E version of P + P, and the chubby cheeks guy from Notting Hill...not a period piece but funny nonetheless.
I told David about my new George Eliot find and he surprised me by telling me that George Eliot was actually a woman...and that George Eliot was her pen name. Now I was intrigued (and embarassed 1. that I didn't already know that and 2. because I haven't read anything by him...her...whatever.)
I now have about 5 other George Eliot based movies in my Netflix queue. And a big list of new classic novels I need to devour.
Anyone out there have a fave, or ever seen any of them?
I don't know about George Eliot, but I did just finish the Young Victoria that you recommended and LOVED it! I also recently watched a mini-series called North and South. I don't know if you've mentioned that one before or not but if you haven't seen it, it's pretty good. It's kind of a Charles Dickens-Jane Austen type of movie. It's worth seeing! :)

ReplyDeleteI did enjoy North and South but have not watched Daniel or Wives and Daughters but I keep looking at them wondering. Now I will go watch them. Just found your site, btw, and yes Miss Pettigrew, good movie.
