My Favorite Baby Things!

Nearly a year has passed since we became parents and I wanted to share what helped us survive this amazing journey!

1. Swaddle. SWADDLE. Swaddle your baby! Okay, I swaddled mine and I swear by it. The happiest babies I know are or were swaddled. The best sleeping babies I know were or are swaddled. We swaddled Jude until he was almost 6 months old and could roll over. He liked it. He LOVED it. It kept his little flailing baby arms close to his tiny body and made him feel secure and warm. If he fussed or whined, we swaddled him up and he calmed RIGHT down. No joke. Ask David. We don't lie. Swaddle your baby. Some friends have told me that their baby doesn't like being swaddled. Even if my next baby seems to not like it, I'm going to keep doing it, or at least trying it for a while. They could just be not used to it. Jude was swaddled in the hospital from day one and it made him sleep so much better than when he wasn't. I recommend Aden and Anais Muslin Swaddle blankets. I had the regular muslin with Jude, but I'm planning on getting the bamboo ones also next time around because they are a billion times softer. I also used SwaddleMe for Jude when he got a little bigger for night time. I've heard great things about the Miracle Blanket as well. I liked the muslin ones the best because they are thin and I didn't have to worry about it getting on his face if he happened to come unswaddled (also why I used the velcro ones at night). I am not a paranoid mom, but have heard too many stories about suffocation, so Jude hasn't slept at night with a blanket (he stopped being swaddled around 6 months) until like last week, and he's 2 weeks away from turning 1. This is one warning I've read about online and stuck to it.

2. Mam Pacifiers. I gave Jude a pacifier starting around week 2 after I was sure he was a nursing champ. For two months after that I tried to help him keep that dang green round green pacifier in his mouth and he couldn't really for more than 30 seconds. A friend recommended I try the Mam brand, and I did happen to have some that were given to me as a gift. BINGO! I had tried gumdrop, NUK, Tommee Tippee and a few others, and Mam was the only one he could keep in. He still uses them for sleeping.  Pacifiers are a controversial choice, but he loved it and I love it, and I hope getting rid of them won't be too hard. Everything else with this kid has been pretty easy so here's to hoping! And yes, I'd still give it to him all over again if I had the choice. It has made my life wonderful for a year so far, and a few days of whining hell after taking it away are going to be worth that time of bliss :) If it seems like your baby doesn't like their pacifier and you want them to take one, try MAM. They sell them at Target, WalMart, and Baby's R Us. *Note. There are 3 different sizes: Newborn, 0-6 months and 6+ months. I started with the 0-6 and switched to the 6+ once he was six months.

3. White Noise Machine. We have this one and use the ocean or rain setting. The benefits? We don't have to tip toe around the house once Jude is in bed. It's a constant noise that he likes and helps him sleep or fall back asleep. And it's small enough that we take it with us when we stay somewhere else. I think it's a reassuring sound, so even when we stay with family or in a hotel, it's a constant, and he sleeps just as well as at home.

4. Security Camera in lieu of a Baby Monitor. I was not ready to spend $200+ on a baby video monitor. Someone...maybe David?...had the brilliant idea of getting a regular security monitor instead. Turns out they're about $70 online. Instead of a bulky video screen to view your sleeping baby, you simply download an app. We each have access to our sleeping boy wherever we are...at the movies on a date or in the next room. We also downloaded the app on our ipad for babysitters to check in on him. It has the functionality to listen in on the room (which you can keep open all night if you want, just make sure your phone's plugged in). You can talk to your baby, move the camera around to get a better view or look around the room, zoom in on the baby...it's amazing. And if I want to get another one for our next baby...I'll still be under the price of a normal baby video monitor. (We also plan on using them as security cameras once their function as a baby monitor is done).

Now onto my non-essentials but loved items:

5. Dreft Laundry Detergent. I thought special baby laundry detergent was going to be a waste of money. However, when Jude was a few months old and had a bit of 'baby acne', my doctor commented on it and said that it might just be irritation from his face being against his clothes or my clothes. It wasn't a huge deal, but I decided to start washing his clothes and mine and David's shirts in Dreft and his little face cleared up within a few days. It made me happy and the detergent smells like yummy clean babies. I've only had to buy 2 bottles, so it's not a huge expense.

6. ZIPPER pajamas. Because who has time for all those stupid snaps?!

7. Natural, scent free dish soap. PLEASE buy some. You'll be washing bottles, pacifiers, toys, sippy cups and utensils. They don't need to smell like lemon. I like the Seventh Generation brand because it's pretty inexpensive.

Summer Plans!

Woo hoo! Finals are over and now our schedules can get a little more normal. Summer heat isn't our favorite thing but summer activities we like! It's our first summer with Jude and we want to fill it with exciting plans like...

1 Beach days
2 Evening park picnics
3 Lots of watermelon
4 Visit park splash pads
5 Teach Jude how to kick in the pool
6 Fill our patio with flowers and a water play table for Jude
7 Make homemade popsicles with fresh fruit
8 Make homemade ice cream
9 S'more nights with the fire pit in my parent's backyard
10 Mountain weekend visits and hikes
11 Lots of corn on the cob
12 Morning or evening walks in the cooler air around the neighborhood

That's all I can think of for now, but it already seems like a lot. Summer is hot here, so I'm sure we'll be in the pool a ton. I love each new season and the fun plans it brings!

I'm into it

What I'm into right now:
1. How much Jude loves food (see photo). He's also learned how to drink out of a straw. Big boy!

2. Using the Feedly app- so much better than the blogger app and even google Reader. Those always used to freeze or quit on me. Feedly is much more user friendly and prettier, anyway. Are you still into blogs? I've narrowed my list down to mostly friends/family and a few guilty pleasure blogs. I wish I wasn't so snoopy...

3. Having central air at my disposal. After a summer pregnant, on the third floor of an apartment complex in humid Orange County with only an ancient wall unit AC to cool us down I am joyous over living in comfortable temperatures.

4. Babies. Newborn babies. Jude as a baby. What the? He's almost EIGHT months old. I never in my life imagined that I would be baby hungry this soon after giving birth. We're not planning on having kids quite this close together but I will say that my views on age gaps has changed drastically in the last 2 months.

5. Anne Shirley Blythe. I have loved the Anne of Green Gables series since I was a little girl and I'm re-reading them for the 4th time. I'm on the 5th book in the series (Anne's House of Dreams) and sat on Friday morning with tears running down my cheeks at 6AM (I had just finished working) because it just feels so real. The dialogue especially, and experiences, are so true to life and I love Anne's personality and attitude toward life, love and happiness. Plus, Gilbert is the perfect husband. It's had me daydreaming about the benefits of having a doctor for a husband...I guess a lawyer will have to do ;)

6. Netflix obsessions: The Office, Parenthood, Overboard, Lars and the Real Girl.

7. Fenugreek supplements. If you want to produce more breast milk, take it. It works for me and makes a HUGE difference. I buy mine at Sprouts. (I pump for Jude's last feeding because he's often too tired to eat enough before bed with nursing alone).

Marie

You know I love movies set in times long ago. One of my faves is Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette. I remember seeing the trailer for it before it came out, and it was set to New Order's "Age of Consent" and I couldn't stop watching it. Kings + Queens + fancy dresses and shoes + a soundtrack filled with 80's music and Vivaldi...what a combination. Have you seen it? Do you like it? I own it and watch it every year. Plus Versailles was amazingly gorgeous blew my mind when I visited it and saw where she really lived. It's beyond ridiculous.

Baby Love

You don't know how happy and relieved I am to have our big news out there into the world! I can finally talk about it all. It's hard to keep a big secret like that. Anyway, I've been pinning to my Baby Board on Pinterest for a really long time, but recently I've found some really cute items and inspiration for baby. At this point everything I like is somewhat neutral since we don't know what we're having yet. There is some CUTE stuff out there!

Happy Weekend!

I am so happy it's Friday! I love two nights of uninterrupted sleep and a break from my early morning work. Our plans for this weekend include:
Puffy German pancakes
A walk on the beach
BBQ with family on Sunday. I'm making these buns again for burgers. So good!
Lots of cookies and cookie ice cream sandwiches.
My dessert last night was my #1 favorite thing inside my #2 favorite thing. (channeling Ron Swanson)
What are your weekend plans?

Men

I'm reading Mindy Kaling's book right now and I love the chapter about the ideal man. (It's actually titled "Men need almost nothing to be great.") It breaks down how to be a great guy. Here are some of my favorite points:

-Own several pairs of dark-wash straight leg jeans
-When you think a girl looks pretty, say it
-Avoid asking if someone needs help in a kitchen or at a party, just start helping
-Have one great cologne and wear very little of it, all the time
-Get a little jealous now and again, even if you're not strictly a jealous guy

Her explanations are funny and real. I love it. Here are some guys I think are great:

All I want for Christmas is...

I love love love Christmas! This is definitely our favorite time of year. We spent Friday night picking out and decorating our tree. I even carried it up the stairs by myself! It's making the house smell wonderful.
Yes. I'm greedily posting things that I want for Christmas. If nothing else, maybe it will help some of you pick things out for friends, sisters, moms. I've been pouring over other bloggers lists for ideas and inspiration.
Really the only thing I want for Christmas is a new pair of glasses. That's David's only assignment. But, in a perfect world where he could read my mind (or read my blog more often than once a month), these would be under the tree as well:

I have wanted a glass citrus juicer for who knows how long:

Large metal lettering...maybe "EAT" for the kitchen?

The Linus Throw from CB2.
Cute little Folk Garden Calendars:

What are you asking for this Christmas?

Half-Pint

I think we've established by now that I like old fashioned things. (I stole that phrase from Nancy Drew). Old houses, thrifted furniture and knick knacks, cooking and baking from scratch. Today I was thinking about people I look up to and admire, and one of the first people that always comes to mind is Laura Ingalls Wilder (what a perfect name, right? I love it.) I've always been a big reader and spent hours in my room in bed reading anything I could get my hands on, although I am a sucker for the classics. I started with the Little House on the Prairie series in 2nd grade and fell in love. I have read the  series several times and reread all of them a few years ago when I bought the box set off of eBay to save for my future children. I cherish the stories of the Ingalls' struggles, humility and courage. Laura, whom her dad called 'Half Pint' was a little spitfire, but obedient and full of integrity, and honestly throughout my childhood I remembered 'lessons learned' from the Little House stories often. (By the way, I have tried to get a cool nickname like Half Pint for years. I tried to get David to call me Pee Wee and Freckles, to no avail. Haha.) I plan on giving the books as gifts to neices and close friend's children as they grow and hope that they love the sweet, timeless stories from the past as much as I have.
At some point I plan on traveling around the US and visiting any Laura Ingalls Wilder points of interest that might still be out there. I know there's at least one on the eastern side of South Dakota, which is where she lived for a large part of her life. I'm so happy that she recorded the amazing stories of her life when America was changing so much and things were so different.
I also love that my Dad loves Little House. He gave me a season of the show, which we both love, for Christmas a few years ago. My dad IS Charles Ingalls. He does everything for his family and always stands for truth. Maybe someday I can become more like Laura, just as my Dad has become like Pa.

Style Advice

For the most part, I like how I dress and I feel like I know how to dress my body in a pretty flattering way. I do get into style ruts or sometimes choose things that I love over how they flatter my body, but for the most part I steer toward open necked tops, nothing too tight, high waisted pants or skirts to suck me in and hit me in the right spot on my waist. My issue this week is that we're getting pictures taken this week and I need advice with what to wear! In the past I've always worn jeans- because that's US and I want the photos to represent us. However, I want to do something fun, bright, different, but still us, this time. So, what are my options? I'll break them down for you, and I'd love any input, suggestions or inspiration.

Jeans: skinny darks or flared darks

Pants: black, high waisted skinnies

Skirts: Madewell chambray button down skirt, worn high waisted
I can't stop wearing this skirt
Topsred-orange plaid collared button up, plaid wool collared button up (seen in this post), t-shirts, cardigans, belts...

Shoes: brown Frye motorcycle boots, red ankle strapped wooden open toed clogs, flats, white slight wedged Target slip ons...

the red clogs look similar to these

What do you think?

Stuff I love.

Outfits I wish I wore daily. Outfits I wish I could convince David to dress in for church... I'll keep dreaming.

Calling all Mad Men Enthusiasts

I guess if you're a Mad Men lover you are not necessarily a Joan lover. She's a little harsh. But I love her! I love her red hair, her amazing outfits and the fact that she is curvy and proud of it.

I'm almost done watching the 4th season and I have been coveting Joan's pen necklace for weeks. I always think to myself how I really want the exact same thing but that I'd probably never find it. Well... I was wrong!
After googling 'Joan's necklace Mad Men' I found this amazing vintage inspired piece.

Now my only struggle is...would I wear it? I need to force myself, I think. (I'm not a huge jewelry person). Maybe it will inspire me to dress up more :) Do you watch Mad Men? Are you a Joan fan? Oh, and have you seen the new Banana Republic line/window displays? I LOVE them!

Am I a Runner?

Probably not. Running 2-3 times a week isn't really that legit, but I'm working my way up to it. I have hated running my entire life! I was the girl who barely passed PE. I don't like jogging around, getting sweaty, or ANY sports. The most I've ever run without stopping was 8th grade when we had to do the mile once a week and one time I did the entire thing in a slow jog. Since then I still haven't worked my way back. But I'm trying! My sister has been encouraging me to go running with her since I moved home. She just moved up to school last week, and I've surprised myself by still going, just alone. I can feel myself getting better and better and it getting easier and easier. I know everyone has told me that it gets easier, but for some reason I've never believed them.

I want to run to get in good shape, to be healthy and happy, but also to accomplish something. I know I can keep it up and I look forward to accomplishing some goals with it. If anyone has any tips or stories of how they got to a point where they loved it, I'd love to hear them! (And yes, that is Kourtney Kardashian up there. I think she's cute).

Decor Plans

We're moving in about a week to a little apartment nice and close to school. We can't wait to get settled in! I'm really looking forward to starting over and slowly finding pieces that we LOVE and show our style. I'm planning on thrifting every piece we purchase, so let the hunting begin! These pieces below are just inspiration and ideas for what I have planned. I'm sure I won't be able to find anything exact, but they kind of give an idea of what I'm looking for.
